Today, as I changed the calendar over to October and looked at the month ahead, I also paused to look back over the last 6 weeks. Our morning routines are settled, friendship are blooming, and overall, our days are ready for more and more additions. We have started to challenge these little ones to see the world as a reader. Noticing letters, sounds, and exclamation points. They giggle each morning, when I try to "trick" them as we count together and I mix up the numbers. Their eyes look for patterns and the wheels turn as they shout out "That's MY letter!" or "It rhymes!". So much of our learning is done in the moment. While singing our phonics song at large group, discussing a topic in small group, reading a story together, completing a name puzzle, looking for seeds in the garden, or using our hands to capture an idea in play dough.. It is hard to place that kind of learning in a back pack. October will be packed full of fun and new learning. My hope is that you will talk to your child about their favorite song, the best part of the story, and what they did really well at school today. When they share a little, be sure to respond "Tell me more..."
Tonight, as I downloaded pictures to share with you, I had to smile. Many of them are a little blurry. They are full of action, movement, busy hands, and little chatting lips. They truly capture our first few days. As a teacher, I spend a lot of time standing back and watching the motion. The runners, the huggers, the helpers, the cleaners, the organizers, and the watchers...each participating in their own way. Yes, we are learning when to hug and when to hold our hands still. Yes, we are learning when to run and when to walk, but most of all we are learning where we fit and how our movements impact others. One thing is certain, we will always be bodies in motion. That is what preschoolers do best.
Welcome to preschool! The transition from summer to fall is always bitter sweet for me as a mom and a teacher. As a mom, I love the relaxed schedule and extra time with my own family that summer brings, but also know my kiddos can't wait to be back with their friends, activities, and challenged by everything school offers. As a teacher, summer allows me to reflect on the growth, fun, and amazing relationships built with "my kids" last year. When fall comes around, I admit that I get a little nervous and excited, spending the wee hours of the morning wondering about this new class and what they will bring to my life. The first day of school is significant. It marks a place and time in our children's lives...a new step, a new journey. We turn them over to new teachers, new friends, and new experiences, with the hope that they will thrive, be happy, and loved deeply. My promise to you is that we will always remember how important your little one is and work hard every day to see them as "our kids" too. Enjoy the last few days of summer. Mrs. Sebetka

18+ years working with little people have given me an appreciation for the finer things in life: giggles, wide eyes, high fives and a good book. All signs of a great day! ArchivesCategories |
